Wiki Developer at assembla

Desired service type:
Hourly

Description, tasks, and duties
Primary responsibility for a professional wiki to be used by scientists and researchers. The first version of the wiki, which has been developed in conjunction with the Wikimedia Foundation, contains a wiki page for each concept in the medical domain. Each page is composed dynamically from structured information in a database through an extension of the Wikimedia software (wikidata). Semantic services have been linked to the content of the wiki page via a newly developed mediawiki skin.

An example of this product is located at http://www.wikiproteins.org/
Summarize the opportunity. Why is this a good team, project and role?

We are a startup company dedicated to building advanced discovery and knowledge management services for (life) scientists. Our founding team is from very diverse backgrounds such as biology, computer science, and linguistics. Our company was founded on the observation that individual scientists have too much to read and understand, and also no convenient way to combine and evaluate existing information into potentially valuable new knowledge.
We are building web-based services and web applications, partly freely available, partly subscription-based, that will assist the individual researcher in exploring the knowledge space of his interest. An example would be a biologist who has been building expertise for several years on a few proteins that are potentially involved in the onset of a certain disease. The scientist is interested not only in reading anything available on the relevant proteins and diseases, but would also be interested in emerging associations that have not yet been proven but are highly likely based on the information contained in diverse literature.
We are a US-based company with employees both in the USA and Europe. The majority of our development team is located in our Rockville, MD office. The main ideas and algorithms have been developed over the past few years at the Erasmus University, Rotterdam, The Netherlands and Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands. As there is a strong connection with the academic world, we have first-hand insight in the needs and requirements of our scientific users
