Localization Manager at hi5

hi5 is a global brand for young people, where over 60 million members have established accounts and personal pages. Members use hi5 to communicate with friends around the world, and to connect with the local and global communities that are important to them. hi5 provides a localized experience for its members, enabling people to connect with others based on language, heritage or other personally relevant cultural and popular interests. hi5 was founded in 2003, is privately held, and located in San Francisco. The company is profitable and is ranked in the top 15 most trafficked sites online.

Position: Localization Manager
Location: San Francisco, CA

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Manages the localization of company's sites or pages into targeted countries.
  • At a manager level, has operational (rather than strategic) responsibilities to ensure that site content is appropriately translated and transformed for targeted countries.
  • Ensures that localization and site content are compelling to users.
  • Ensures accurate and meaningful translation and porting of U.S. site content and features into the languages of and interactive design appropriate for targeted countries.
  • Plans and manages the activities of the localization staff in all aspects of the localization of assigned site content.
  • Often has a background in linguistics, languages and computer science. Typically, incumbent has seven or more years experience of computational linguistics, applied linguistics or localization, with at least two years in people management.

Secondary Responsibilites:
  • Ensures the collaboration of engineering, UI and marketing to guide and facilitate translation and localization.
  • Negotiates for and coordinates external localization resources.
  • Writes and/or manages third party translations and ensures review of all translated materials for accuracy and effectiveness.
  • Ensures the ongoing training and development of direct reports and other localization personnel.
