Analytics at Ebay

Primary Job Responsibilities
This role is for a corporate level initiative that will leverage cutting edge technologies in analytics, data mining, advanced statistics, visualization, stream processing and many other multi-disciplinary technologies. This role offers a unique opportunity to innovate and work with data, technology, and people from all eBay companies (Market Places, PayPal, Skype, StubHub, Shopping.com, etc).
  • Be the lead analyst to support a major new analytical initiative involving eBay subsidiaries – Marketplaces (eBay.com), PayPal and Skype
  • Work with Product Management partners to understand fraud reduction use cases and evaluate benefits
  • Reduce losses by analyzing and correlating fraud patterns across the three platforms and suggesting new models, techniques, and technology
  • Accelerate favorable risk treatment for new and recent users by analyzing and correlating legitimate use across the three platforms
  • Explore the use of traditional and advanced statistical techniques like logistic regression, Bayesian trees, decision trees, machine learning/neural networks, clustering, link analysis, graph theory and network theory to gain new insights on cross-company data, which in turn result in actionable ways to reduce fraud and risk without compromising business growth
  • Applying risk/fraud models to predict and control risk associated with new accounts, and to combat credit card fraud, bank account fraud, identity theft fraud, spoof fraud etc.
  • Preparing and extracting data from large databases.
  • Analyzing data covering a wide range of information from user profile to transaction history. Identifying new fraud patterns through data mining.

Job Requirements
  • Strong academic profile including an undergraduate or graduate degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Operations Research and Econometrics
  • Experience in analyzing massive and highly complex data sets, performing ad-hoc analysis and data manipulation
  • Familiarity with standard statistical analysis techniques and model development techniques
  • Ideal candidate would have one or more of the following
  • Applications of statistical techniques to real world problems
  • Understanding of risk management techniques (e.g., logistic regression, score carding etc)
  • Ability to package and present analysis to a senior audience; in particular, the ability to simply communicate complex ideas to diverse business and technology audiences
  • Ability to work with large cross-functional teams
  • Strong “business/common sense” for the potential of analyses to produce short-term and long-term business benefits
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in terms of requirements and timelines
  • 3years of experience in data management and quantitative analyses
  • Expert skills in SQL and SAS (on SQL Server, Oracle, or Teradata)
  • Strong skills in Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Strong skills in major statistical packages (e.g., SAS, Matlab, SPSS)

Staff Business Systems Analyst at Ebay

Primary Job Responsibilities
Candidates will be responsible for gathering business requirements, translating them into technical designs, and creating reports for internal Accounting, Purchasing, Finance, Treasury, Audit, Legal and HR business customers. Successful applicants will have a breadth of functional knowledge and hands-on skills in the area of business analysis and report development. The applicant is expected to have a command of basic accounting concepts/principles and to recommend the best tools with which to meet business requests across SAP R/3 and SAP BW. This position will actively be involved with IT initiatives such as implementing more comprehensive reporting solutions, process improvements, and system upgrades. This position reports into the Financial Projects and Reporting team of the eBay Business Systems department within eBay IT. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Develop efficient functional and technical designs from business requirements and write or maintain SAP R/3 and SAP Business Warehouse reports to meet business needs.
  • Analyze and diagnose data quality or system deficiency issues and provide options for resolution.
  • Gather requirements from eBay business units and document system design specifications based on those requirements. Be able to translate those requirements into software application requirements, and implement the solution.
  • Configure, customize and develop reports and queries using a variety of SAP reporting tools and MSExcel.
  • Work with users and technical developers to create and execute robust test plans/conditions
  • Analyze improvement requests and develop solutions using business process expertise
  • Contribute to project estimating efforts - providing input/clarity on business requirements and options to implement those requirements.
  • Work with other IT resources and business personnel to accurately estimate PDLC efforts and design software UI such that it adheres to standards and supports the desired processes.
  • Help prepare/lead training and information sessions for end users.
  • Manage own workload, accurately estimate effort for tasks, and work with business users on priorities/goals, and work towards meeting those goals.
Develop in-depth functional knowledge of existing and new software applications.
Support month end and quarter close financial processes.

Job Requirements
  • A proven resource in defining SAP FI/CO systems strategy, developing systems requirements, and implementing practical business solutions under multiple deadlines.
  • Previous experience with application architectures with understanding in fundamental database design and user interface standards.
  • Effective communication and organizational skills including documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal, team building skills and customer facing experience
  • Ability to think logically and analyze application and business process requirements and accurately convert them to design specifications.
  • Strong problem solving and issue resolution experience is a must
  • MS Windows and MS Office, particularly Excel, application experience.
